Imagine… your country invaded and occupied
and not a soul around the world notices or cares

your government thrown down and exiled
your culture, religion and language denied and denigrated

while outsiders practice your people’s religion wholeheartedly
never caring about the plight of the people who carried that religion through history

the entire history of your people called a lie
while every nation on earth believes in what your colonizers say about you

and when you speak out, disrupt and engage in disobedience
you are called violent and a betrayer of your people’s deeply held faith

your greatest spiritual masters, culture holders, teachers and leaders
are attacked and called evil

your history rewritten to show that you never existed in the first place
and when you and others you know and love escape and tell the world of your tortures,
you are called liars

imagine it

white is now black
and black is now white
while the apologists for those who are exterminating your people say things like
“the situation is more complex than that” or
“it’s not so black and white” or
“try to understand their side” in reference to your torturers and oppressors

imagine it

or when you and your youth decide to target your oppressors who now occupy your country, you are called ungrateful and violent
and your oppressors cry out about how unfair you are acting towards them

or people pay you the proper lip service while doing nothing at all to stop it
or they tell you to shut up
or they tell you to learn to get over it
using your own religion’s ideas against you
in an attempt to seem wiser or holier than thou

imagine the liars’ and the deniers’ faces
when the truth will expose their new clothing

imagine when the world’s smugness and denials
comes home to roost and they have to reap the results of their own evil actions
it is evil itself to stand by and do nothing
or to know what is happening and to lie and say nothing is happening

imagine when your torturers are forced to flee from your country
their flags in tatters or burning
and their false pride exposed as the disgusting murderous cultural practices it truly is

imagine your people again free
and the greatest revenge is to be the laughter of your children
happy once again to be themselves
never having to experience or live with the memories personally of what you have gone through

imagine the nightmare finally destroyed
and the sun shining again on your history and your future
